A Free Space Optical transmission system is a wireless form of connection designed for the interconnection of two points which have a direct line of sight. This line-of-sight technology approach uses invisible beams of light to provide optical bandwidth connections capable of sending up to 1.25 Gbps of data, voice, and video communications simultaneously through the air (optical communications at the speed of light), enabling fiber-optic connectivity without requiring physical fiber-optic cable. The carrier used for the transmission of this signal is Infrared and is generated by either high power LED or laser diode. The easiest way to visualise how the systems work is to imagine two points interconnected with fibre optic cable then remove
the fibre. FSO technology requires light. The use of light is a simple concept similar to optical transmissions using fiber-optic cables; the only difference is the medium. Light travels through air faster than it does through glass, so it is fair to classify FSO technology as optical communications at the speed of light.

LAN to LAN Communication
Full duplex connectivity and wireline speeds are achieved providing the infrastructure for LAN to LAN connectivity. With speeds of up to Gigabit Ethernet then businesses are able to provide access to bandwidth hungry applications from remote sites at the same time as retaining the security and integrity of the data inherent within the Corporate LAN. Through the utilisation of lasers as a transmission medium then the security issues and network breaches facing unlicensed radio and microwave are overcome using our FSO technology.
Typically many of these bandwidth requirements are for circuits that can operate across relatively short distances. Typical environments include office-to-office connections in the urban environment, campus locations and factory locations where a line of site is usually achievable. Traditional connectivity solutions have included expensive leased circuits from the Telco operators, installation of time consuming and costly fixed cabling or wireless solutions such as licensed microwave or IEEE 802.11b radio which are now suffering from spectrum availability and security issues. Within the wireless arena, Free Space Optics (FSO) has emerged as an ideal technology to provide cost effective, license free, high bandwidth solutions to the bandwidth bottleneck encountered in the enterprise market place.
FSO solutions in the Telecoms world
As operators launch new data and messaging services, and continue to build out network Infrastructures, operators need to focus on the customer needs, experiences and the applications which will generate future revenues. Users are significantly more sophisticated than when 2G first appeared and much more demanding in the quality of service they receive as a result. Operators are therefore dependant on the robustness of the infrastructure they use and the capacity and solidity of the bandwidth it generates.
Systemtech Group offers the most comprehensive set of FSO solutions available, providing:
FSO in the cellular backhaul “banishing the bandwidth blues”
Free Space Optics (FSO) already plays a key role in cellular networks, providing cost-effective and quickly deployable connections between base stations and the nearest network switching node. Indeed, the reliability and low cost of the technology has made it a popular option, with GSM operators worldwide. With the growth of GPRS and the debut of 3G data services, a new wave of backhaul deployment is under way. As base-station densities increase, more cost-effective and flexible systems are required to serve shorter site-to-site distances. As well as supporting the evolution to 3G mobile technology, backhaul networks must also provide additional capacity to meet the increased traffic demands resulting from new content-rich mobile data services. Also, operators need equipment that can be installed rapidly to meet market demand.
In this new environment, the flexibility and ease of implementation of FSO systems offer an efficient and future-proof way of backhauling voice and data traffic. It is vital that FSO systems evolve to handle more dynamic traffic patterns and provide increased capacity. The systems can be optimised where a crowded radio spectrum limits the deployment of microwave technologies. Furthermore, they must enable operators to respond quickly to changing market conditions, while maximizing network availability, quality of service (QoS) and security to boost and protect revenue. These goals are difficult to achieve using the current backhaul architectures alone. A number of new transmission technologies are needed, and some new network design and management techniques. Operators must also adopt an end-to-end view of the network to achieve maximum efficiency and return on investment.
